Mazda3 with new 105HP Skyactiv-D diesel engine unveiled

The Japanese folks at Mazda announced the introduction of a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine in the lineup of the Mazda3 model.

Previously seen on the smaller Mazda2, the new engine returns an average fuel economy of 74,3mpg UK with CO2 emissions of 99 g/km. In terms of power, it delivers 105 hp and 270 Nm of torque, enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint in 11 seconds and a top speed of 187 km/h.

Both hatchback and fastback variants of the Mazda3 will benefit from this powerplant. It is paired to a standard six-speed transmission but a Skyactiv-Drive automatic one is also available, only for the hatchback though.

The main feature of this engine is the low 14.8:1 compression ratio similar to the one found in the 2.2-liter engine. The Skyactiv-D line focuses on efficiency so there should be no surprise regarding the good economy figures.

The Mazda3 fitted with the 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D engine starts from £18,895 on-the-road. If you pick the better-equipped variants, the price will obviously ramp up. According to Mazda, the new engine will be offered on their model starting December 1st. Therefore, if you are interested, be sure to mark next Tuesday in your calendar.
