“Based on the available data, NHTSA does not believe that Chevy Volts or other electric vehicles pose a greater risk of fire than gasoline-powered vehicles,” says NHTSA. This is the final conclusion of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which investigated the potential fire risk of Chevrolet Volt.
Two months ago, NHTSA started investigating a possible major issue of the American hybrid model. There were some concerns that after a crash, the model could catch fire, a big problem in case of a serious accident where the victims could not run away from the fire.
It seems that these fears were groundless and no vehicles were affected by this potential issue. Chevrolet wants to reassure the customers owning a Chevy Volt who were concerned by this problem.
“NHTSA remains unaware of any real-world crashes that have resulted in a battery-related fire involving the Chevy Volt or any other electric vehicle. Generally all vehicles have some risk of fire in the event of a serious crash,” concludes the American agency.
