Video: Would You Drive a 1.8T Quattro Trabant 601?

If you lived under the communism block in the Eastern Europe or in the German Democratic Republic back in the 1980s, then you definitely remember the symbol of those harsh times, which is the iconic Trabant 601.

This Trabant 601 left the German factory in 1980s and has undergone a lot of modifications ever since. 14 years ago, its Polish owner replaced the original engine with a 1.1-liter VW Polo. Other engines soon followed, a 1.3-liter, a 1.8-liter as well as a 2.0-liter engine, the latter one being previously fitted on a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

But the real transformation was been made a couple of years ago, when its owner crashed his other car, an Audi TT, and decided to fit the Trabant with the car`s 1.8-liter turbo unit, which came with the Quattro system.

Now imagine a Trabant 601 coming with a powerful 1.8-liter turbo mill, churning out a whopping 270 horsepower, available at 5,700 rpm and 369 Nm of torque, available at 4,500 rpm. The big surprise is its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h, done in an amazing 4.5 seconds.

Apart the engine, the Trabant 601 was also fitted with other parts from the Audi TT, like the braking system with 312 mm and 256 mm front and rear discs, along with the ABS and ESP systems and other tweaks inside.

So, if you see a black Trabant 601 cruising the streets near your part of town, don`t dare challenging it for a quick drag race. It will definitely blow you away. Enjoy the video as well as the photo gallery which also reveals some other modes brought at the exterior as well as inside!
