The new 2011 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Saloon is claimed to have 2,000 improvements over the model it replaced, so what do they all add up to? Here we will look at some of the more important features of this compact executive and family car. There are a large number of options you can go for in deciding on the build of your C-Class version.

In terms of performance you can choose from an engine range that includes the mighty 470 bhp 6.3 litre V8 petrol engine which goes like a rocket with a concomitantly environmentally unfriendly fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, a number of extremely economical small four cylinder diesel engines equipped with fuel saving BlueEFFICIENCY technology which will return nearly 60 mpg yet still have a sprightly performance; along with many engines in between.

There are also choices when it comes to the quality of ride and the car’s handling characteristics. The Elegance is optimised for comfort whilst the Sport is optimised for, well, sport. Both versions feature adaptive suspension systems that react automatically to changing road conditions though the sport is set up to provide a stiffer and firmer ride with reduced body roll whilst still providing a high level of ride comfort. The C-Class Saloon is a very safe car and as well as its five star EuroNCAP safety rating, it comes equipped with seven airbags which provide all-round protection including special protection for the knee and the pelvis. Electronic safety systems include stability control plus a system that prepared the occupants and electronic control systems for an impending crash. The car is very functional and practical. In the rear there is plenty of space for either two adults or three children, though three adults would feel somewhat cramped due to the large central transmission tunnel. The boot is very generous and has 475 litres load space.

There are three levels of trim, but even the most basic SE includes a broad range of equipment including alloy wheels, parking sensors, cruise control etc. With the Elegance you get leather and split folding rear seats, and the sport has the modifications already mentioned plus a sporty looking body kit.
