The German brand’s performance division, BMW M, has unveiled BMW M Ignite, a revolutionary pre-chamber ignition technology. Starting this summer, the M2, M3, and M4 cars will have inline 6-cylinder engines with this technology, which will be more efficient at greater loads.

A new technology will be installed in a number of BMW M performance cars with inline 6-cylinder engines starting in July. The goal of the new technology, known as BMW M Ignite, is to boost the engine’s efficiency at high rpm.

The new Euro 7 emission regulations, which will take effect in November, will also be suitable with the BMW M inline 6-cylinder engines thanks to this technology.

The German company received a patent for the BMW M Ignite technology in 2024. It is made up of a novel pre-chamber combustion technology that was inspired by the racing vehicles of the Bavarians.

The system is made up of a prechamber inside the cylinder head that is connected to the cylinder’s primary combustion chamber via a number of perforations. The new engine features two ignition systems because the prechamber has its own ignition coil and spark plug.

Conventional spark plugs generate a spark in the main combustion chambers prior to the spark plug in the prechamber at low and medium rpm.

A portion of the fuel and air mixture is routed through holes in the prechamber and ignited there, taking over the primary function when the engine is running at high revs.

The upgraded engine will have turbochargers with variable turbine shape and a greater compression ratio in addition to the new prechamber combustion system.

All M3 and M4 models will use the new inline 6-cylinder engine with BMW M Ignite technology starting in July 2026. Beginning in August, the BMW M2 will also have the same technology beneath the hood.
