The XT6 high-end model from Cadillac was ahead of its time even from its very beginning; however, after just a single generation, the luxury car was discontinued, with production to end in 2025.

The three-row luxury sport utility vehicle gave way to the fully electric Vistiq, yet a fresh report suggests the nameplate might return. According to industry sources cited by GM Authority, General Motors is reviewing its strategy for premium three-row sport utility vehicles, with the redesigned XT6 reportedly under consideration for a 2028 launch in North America.

The reported change follows slower-than-expected electric vehicle adoption across the region. Cadillac currently offers the battery-electric Vistiq below the truck-based Escalade, though demand for gasoline and hybrid luxury models still represents a meaningful part of the premium market. Those conditions appear to have encouraged a second look at a combustion-based three-row entry.

If internal approval arrives, the next XT6 would not move onto an entirely new platform. Instead, GM Authority believes General Motors would revise the first-generation C1 transverse architecture. While the platform has served several vehicles over the years, its origins stretch back more than two decades.

The story begins in 2002 with the Epsilon platform. Six years later, General Motors evolved the architecture into Epsilon II. Another revision appeared for the 2016 model year Chevrolet Malibu, where the company introduced what it calls the E2XX series. The longer-wheelbase version became P2XX, while the crossover derivative received the C1XX designation. Cadillac’s XT5 entered production during the second half of 2015 as the first production model built on C1XX, arriving as a 2017 model year vehicle.

Age presents another challenge. General Motors would need an updated propulsion strategy if the platform is expected to stay relevant through the end of the decade. The previous 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 are unlikely to remain unchanged. The report suggests the V6 is not expected to return, while an updated 2.0-liter engine paired with some level of electrification appears to be the preferred direction.

Among the available options, a self-charging hybrid system is described as the most practical solution. Plug-in hybrid and extended-range electric layouts introduce packaging complications according to the report. Mechanical changes would not stand alone, either. A second-generation XT6 would also adopt Cadillac’s latest interior design language and onboard technologies.

No official confirmation has been issued by Cadillac or General Motors. Both companies continue concentrating on battery-electric products and have not commented on the report from GM Authority. Even so, the possibility of bringing the XT6 back with internal-combustion power reflects changing market conditions and a broader reassessment of customer demand in the North American luxury sport utility segment.
