Anyone waiting for a completely new Mazda MX-5 Miata might need a little more patience. Mazda has already outlined the main changes planned for the 2027 model year in Europe, and those updates focus on refinements rather than a wholesale transformation. That reality has left plenty of room for digital artists to explore alternative possibilities.

One such interpretation comes from Fatih Mehmet Yelkenci, a Turkish virtual designer known online under the yelkencidesign name. His latest CGI exercise takes the current ND-generation MX-5 and nudges it toward a more modern appearance without abandoning the familiar formula that helped make the lightweight roadster successful.

The timing is interesting. Mazda recently confirmed a new Zinc Green paint finish during the Karuizawa Fan Meeting in Karuizawa, Japan, on May 31. The color will become available globally, including in Europe. Alongside the fresh shade, buyers will also see a new Yakudo special version and a handful of smaller updates. Large-scale styling revisions are absent from the official package.

That leaves enthusiasts looking ahead to the next chapter. Rumors continue to point toward a fifth-generation successor, reportedly known as NE during development. Yet available information suggests such a model is unlikely to arrive for the 2027 model year. For now, Mazda’s attention appears focused on incremental changes involving trim levels and powertrain-related adjustments, at least in the European market.

The current MX-5 has been around for quite some time. The fourth-generation roadster debuted in late 2014 across the United States, Europe, and Japan. Since then, both the open-top version and the RF have received updates in 2018, 2021, and 2024. More than ten years after production and sales began, the ND remains the foundation of Mazda’s iconic sports car.

Yelkenci’s proposal stays close to that foundation. Rather than creating a completely different vehicle, the rendering presents a revised ND with a lower stance and a broader visual footprint. The front fascia adopts more upright LED headlights, while the grille grows larger and takes on a friendlier curved shape. The bodywork also receives adjustments intended to shift the character slightly away from cute and toward a more assertive look.

There is one limitation. Despite multiple sketches accompanying the project, the three-dimensional rendering appears only from a single front-three-quarter angle. As a result, the designer’s ideas for the rear section and cabin remain hidden from view.

For enthusiasts who feel the next MX-5 generation is still too far away, this unofficial concept offers an alternative vision. It keeps the familiar roadster intact while suggesting how the ND platform might evolve through the closing years of the decade.
