The legendary 24-hour race of the Nürburgring would present the spectacular Volkswagen R as a showcase in the year 2027. The crew in Warmenau is collaborating with Max Kruse Racing to develop a Golf R that has all-wheel drive, specially tailored to race on the track.
An initial glimpse of the competition model has come out in an exciting new show car. The participation in the competition is a demonstration of a strong commitment to the foundational values of the Volkswagen R brand, whose 25th anniversary is celebrated. “R” is the abbreviation for the word “racing,” and this activity will make the above dream a reality.

The Volkswagen R series has been the quintessence of sportiness and power in the Volkswagen line. The series has continuously demonstrated how the brand focuses on performance, combining innovative technology with an active design.
Reinhold Ivenz, head of Volkswagen R., said, “The Nürburgring 24-hour race is our toughest test under real racing conditions.” The Nürburgring is also our test and development track, and at this race we will meet people who share the same passion for performance, which is why the project fits perfectly with the Volkswagen R philosophy.”
All the models in the R banner have been designed to provide a thrilling driving experience that would be appealing to enthusiasts who desire to experience both speed and agility in their driving. The development of the R series is a testament to the commitment of Volkswagen to push the limits of automotive engineering, and to ensure that these limits are not only met but surpassed by the cars.
The R models have had a history that has spanned more than 2 decades and are the ones that have been used to set the standards in the industry. Although the series keeps on evolving, it is still an expression of the innovative spirit and love of creating vehicles that are thrilling and inspiring, which is what the series is all about.
The R models are not merely cars but rather a celebration of the joy of driving that offers the perfect combination of power, precision, and style that is both appealing to seasoned drivers and to new ones as well. The Volkswagen R series is one of the symbols of the best performance without any trade-off between comfort and practicality of the vehicle.
With each new release, the sales of its predecessors are guaranteed, which makes the R series. The essence of racing and the strong ties to motorsport are fundamental elements of the brand’s identity.
The competition will involve the development of a racing model of the already existing Golf R, which is powered by the all-wheel drive and designed to be able to handle the hard demands of the legendary Nordschleife.
There will be a Volkswagen show car on display to the public and provide a thrilling first preview of the model on the Ring Boulevard in the Nürnberger Trichter.
With the introduction of the Golf R 24H, Volkswagen is on an exciting new journey in the Nürburgring 24-hour race, three years after its first involvement in the race with the Golf GTI Clubsport. Max Kruse Racing is an important partner, as it is highly involved in further development of the project.
